Beamish Draught Irish Stout,
4.2% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Black, with a sweet caramel nose and good burnt flavours before a sweet kick on the back palate.
GOOD WITH: Another one.
Hat Lifter Stout,
4.9% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Smells of chocolate and coffee and has rich Vegemite, beef stock and celery flavours on the palate. Nice creamy mouthfeel, and to end, a dry bitter finish.
BE AWESOME WITH: A lie-in with Bono.
Grand Ridge Moonshine,
8.5% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Smells like old Golden Syrup, raisins and toffee with a long, distinctive palate.
WOULD BE AWESOME WITH: A slab of stinky cheese. Who needs port?
Lawrence Victor Coonawarra, Pale Ale,
4.5% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? A nutty and caramel nose with toasty, nutty biscuits on the palate and a dry, light feel in the mouth.
THIS BEER'D BE AWESOME WHILE: Lying naked in a big Coonawarra clay mud bath.
Holgate Old Pale Ale,
5.0% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Bright copper. Fragrant nose of limes and blossom with a zappy acid tail and twisted bitter kick.
SERVE WITH: T-bone steak and a serve of bok choy with oyster sauce.
Coopers, Best Extra Stout,
6.8% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? An Asian stir-fry: soy sauce, mushroom sauce, sweet capsicum and a touch of banana. A bitter yet fruity finish, masking the behemoth of alcohol with style. A true stout.
DEVOUR WITH: Six slices of burnt toast and Vegemite and strong black coffee - then go back to bed and listen to the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.
Guinness Draught Stout,
4.2% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Creamy, yeasty aromas with strong and bitter flavours that've been tweaked for the masses.
IT'S A LITTLE LIKE: The old grey mare -- a solid old workhorse but she ain't what she used to be.
Murphy's Draught Irish Stout,
4.0% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Leaner than other Irish stouts with more burnt characters. Fades away a bit to a bitter finish
SHOULD COME WITH: A free trip to Ireland.
Grand Ridge Supershine,
11% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Cedar chips and treacle on the nose with a sticky awkward palate offering sweet timber and burnt butter.
REMINDS ME OF: Antonio Banderas, hot, big, mad and sweaty after killing a bar full of Mexicans.
Cascade Special Stout,
5.8% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? As close to black as brown can be. Marmite on the nose with some honeysuckle and a touch of cedar. All this slips down the throat with the ease of a freshly shucked oyster.
REMINDS ME OF: Sex with the inexperienced -- super excited to begin with but ends with too quick a finish.
Kilkenney Draught Irish Beer,
4.3% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Looks like polished copper and has a very sweet, treacley nose, a velvety feel in the mouth, with subtle honeycomb and cream notes.
THIS BEER IS A LITTLE LIKE: Jimeoin in a mid arvo romp on a pebbly Irish beach - a bit scary.
James Squire Porter,
5.9% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Garnet with mushroom-yellow head. Citrus and mineral before a spikey, coffee palate offering a leathery, but soft texture and saddlebag finish.
AWESOME WHILE: Kicking back on a smooth leather lounge with a strong cigar chewing the fat with Liam Gallagher.
Hoegaarden, De Verboden Vrucht (Forbidden Fruit),
8.8% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Fermented dried apricots, full-bodied palate that pulls up with a swift fruit acid tail that leaves the palate clean and sweet.
To be enjoyed: at the end of a swingers dinner party with a cheese platter and someone else's keys. Potentially exciting.
Mountain Goat Hightail Ale,
4.5% Alc/Vol
WHAT'S IT LIKE? Amber. Tasmanian leatherwood honey and a bit of chocolate weighty and creamy on the palate. Sweet rich fruit palate with final bitter twist.
BE AWESOME WITH: Sticky date pudding.

THE PANEL: Many thanks to the panel; Kate McIntyre, Peter Keeghan, Cam Hines, Dave Bonighton and Paul Holgate a mixed bag of drinkers, writers and brewers of beer.
