| “Wine X,” $3.95, is an irreverent journal out of Santa Rosa, Calif., aimed at Gen Xers. It is the easiest to read and use. Their philosophy is that “wine is about passion. It’s about friends, family, food, the environment you’re in and the music you’re listening to. And we think it’s time people started treating wine that way, instead of placing it on a pedestal and worshipping it with a numerical value.”
“Wine X” has a very simple rating system: XXX, exceptionally cool; XX, highly recommended; X, recommended. The commentary on each wine is even more helpful. For example, Sokol Blosser Chardonnay, Oregon, 1996, $13, a one-X wine, is described “Like a Jolly Rancher candy stuck in Cindy Crawford’s hair -- sweet, candied and smells of Paul Mitchell shampoo.” No pedestals here.
