10 questions
How often do you have a glass of wine?
Only five nights per week. Every once in a while you have to drink some water.
If you could only drink one wine (or type of wine) for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I could survive on a steady diet of Rhone Valley reds. These French reds have the most consistent and unique flavors. They're never overbearing and always have a perfect blend of fruit and earth.
Why do you think people feel intimidated about wine?
People are intimated by wine because they're afraid to trust their own instincts. They believe the myth that quality wines are always expensive and that ratings are always right. The bottom line...there's no right or wrong with wines. It's just about what you like.
How long does an open bottle last in your house?
It really varies. Sometimes an hour-and-a-half. Sometimes an hour-and-forty-five minutes.
What's the best/worst bottle of wine you've received as a gift?
I recently received a bottle of 1985 Gaja Barbaresco, which, in my opinion, is the finest vintage of this legendary Italian winemaker's Barbarescos. The best part of this gift is that it wasn't even meant for me. The intended recipient was out of the country. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Ever drink wine right from the bottle? Through a straw? Outta someone's navel?
My early days of wine drinking involved a good amount of drinking straight from the wine box. Fortunately, I've since upgraded to drinking primarily out of a glass, poured from a bottle. I did try drinking out of my girlfriend's navel once. I quickly discovered the one downside of a woman with a beautiful figure. A flat stomach means a shallow navel that's essentially useless as a receptacle. Most of the wine ended up on the carpet of the hotel room. That was the most expensive bottle of cabernet I've ever had.
What would be your dream meal?
Veal Karl Malden at Dan Tanna's (the best restaurant in Los Angeles) with a bottle of 1988 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret, Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Would you be turned off by a screw cap on an expensive bottle of wine?
Yes. Removing the cork is the foreplay. I like foreplay.
Ever use wine to lure someone into bed? (Details, details!)
Yes. And she's still here. Was it me, or was it the merlot?
Favorite winery/wine producer? Why?
My pick for the most well-rounded winery is Robert Sinskey. Sinskey's everyday wines, which are reasonably priced and readily accessible, never disappoint. And when you get into their reserve selections (the 1994 merlot, in particular), this little winery can stand with the best of them.
